Ahtopol was mentioned for the firs time during the 2 nd century A.D. with the name Avleytachous , though the settlement had existed much longer . There is an interesting legend about the foundation of the town and it is connected with the name of the Greek arch – god Zeus . As the legend says , one of his sons - Apollo -fell in love with a beautiful woman of plain origin. They had three charming daughters - Agato , Siza and Viza . Zeus learned about his son's earthly love-affair and banished his children away from the Olimp Mountain peak to the remote Pontos Euxinos (Black Sea). Apollon's daughters founded their own settlements on the Earth - Agato's settlement was called Agatopolis or Ahtopol , Siza's – Sozopol and Viza's - Urdoviza. Agatopolis had very well developed sea trade and fishing . At the archaeological excavations near the town some very ancient coins were found , including such , minted in Mexico , Brazil , Argentina , and , of course, from nearly all European countries . The citizens of Agatopolis had about 100 wooden and 10 iron ships and these were the only means for sea contacts of Ahtopol with nearly the whole civilized world.
